The Ocean Inside


Janna McMahan's debut novel, Calling Home , was a "Need to Read" selection in Target Stores across the nation. It received high praise from critics and readers alike for lively, well-developed characters, action-packed plot and detailed descriptions of Kentucky 's landscape and culture. Her second novel, The Ocean Inside , released in spring 2009, is set along the South Carolina coast and immediately became a bestseller in many Southern independent bookstores.

November 2009 saw the release of Janna's first novella, Decorations , part of a holiday anthology entitled Snow Angels . Upon release, Snow Angels was named to bestseller lists including USA Today , Publisher's Weekly and the New York Times Review of Books .

Janna has won numerous creative writing awards and her short stories have been published online and in journals and magazines such as Wind, Limestone, Yamassee, The Nantahala Review, Arts Across Kentucky and Alimentum. Janna has also published many dozen personal essays and articles on visual and literary art. Her non-fiction has appeared in Skirt!, MAMM, Cure, Appalachian Journal South Carolina Wildlife, Charleston and  The New Southerner.  Her most recent essay, "The Worst Bad Neighbor," is included in the anthology We All Live Downstream by Motes Books.

Janna has appeared at various literary events including the Southern Literary Festival in Charleston , the Decatur Book Festival and the Southern Kentucky Book Festival. She has also spoken at the request of numerous academic institutions including Coastal Carolina University , the Orlando Library Systems, Lincoln Memorial University and the University of South Carolina .

Janna earned a BA and MA in mass communications from the University of Kentucky and the University of South Carolina , respectively. She lives in South Carolina with her husband and their daughter.
